Crossing over the San Juanico Strait, it connects Barangay Cabalawan, Tacloban City on the Leyte side and Sta. Rita town on the Samar side. San Juanico Bridge is the longest and most beautifully designed bridge in the Philippines. It offers many picturesque views, especially of the San Juanico Strait with its thousand whirlpools as well as the lovely islets of the province. The museum located in Real Street, Tacloban City houses paintings of the 14 stations of the Cross done by Filipino artists, a wooden bas-relief of the legend of the First Filipino man-woman (Si Malakas at si Maganda), an image of the Holy Child, a collection of original paintings by national artist Fernando Amorsolo, and priceless collector’s items. It boasts of tastefully decorated guestrooms of varied Filipino motifs and a spacious ballroom.

Pintados Festival
Celebrated every June 29 in Tacloban City, it is a dance festival of painted dancers celebrating important events such as the exploits of war as well as nature worship in narrative dance movements depicting their own folk practices and beliefs. The custom of tattooing earned for the Leyteños the name of Pintados. From ancient history, Roman conquests mentioned tattooed people in Briton, Saitas, Oriental Tartar, and other parts of the world.
Buyogan Festival
Adjudged as one of the ten best festivals of the Philippines, Buyogan’s artistic choreography and realistic costumes focus on the appearance and movement of the honeybee, locally called “buyog,” from where the town’s name originated. Buyogan is celebrated every August 19 in Abuyog, Leyte. |
